Figs and Alligators

In the wake of the Six Day War, Aaron and Bonnie Leibel decided to emigrate to Israel, or, as Jews call it, “make aliyah.”

What followed were twenty tumultuous, frustrating, gratifying and productive years, raising their children, living on a Kibbutz, serving in the army and pursuing their careers.

In the voice of a natural storyteller, Aaron Leibel shares what it’s like to be a stranger in a strange land where you expected to belong, and how, ultimately, he and his family do belong.

The Israel of the 1970s and 1980s comes alive in this balanced, personal account.

Extraordinary Means – A Novel

Meet Melissa Silverstein. She’s twenty-four, witty, cynical, unemployed and unmarried, drifting through life, waiting for the action to start.

And Melissa is in a coma. On the outside, she’s a shell of a girl, but inside – well, her mind is churning. She’s about to take you on a completely unexpected, hysterically funny and touching journey into the inner dreams of a modern-day American family. Speaking of that family … Dad hasn’t come to visit her once. He’s tied up in court trying to stop the hospital from pulling the plug. Every night, Mom’s in the arms of Melissa’s young doctor. Then there’s her brother, Daniel. He’s thinking about killing her. And a host of others – the two younger sisters, rabbis, old boyfriends, scheming aunts – are convinced that only they know what Melissa really wanted to do with her life … and her death.Melissa doesn’t really know either, but for the first time, she’s stopped drifting. And she’s going to use all of her strength, all of her will, to figure out her place in this battling, loving, anxious, noisy family of hers.

Entropy Refraction

A society in chains. Space-time in peril. And a smoldering evil on the brink of victory.

The mutant, murderous Quishiks are on the rise.

In ways seen and unseen, the Quishiks have shaped the course of history for ten millennia. Now they threaten an all-out assault on sentient life throughout the universe, and their deadly scourge is soon to ravage an interstellar civilization bound by rigid ideologies and petty taboos.

As this epic drama continues, it falls once again to the retired diplomat, Ungent Draaf, to reset the balance of power. As he continues his galaxy-spanning quest to find the Ootray, whose failed genetic experiments created the Quishiks, the secrets around their disappearance grow more and more convoluted. For the survivors of this ancient species prefer to hide behind an arcane ethical code, and, for humans and symbiotes to defeat the Quishiks, they must first overcome the evil in themselves.

As the eleventh hour approaches and the twilight of interstellar civilization begins, who will find the moral courage to avert soul-crushing destruction?

California Street: A Mystery

THE ‘90s CLASSIC, FINALLY BACK IN PRINT!

Guilt is San Francisco psychologist Joel Abramowitz’s business — and it is his second feeling after lovely, very rich Margot, his best friend’s wife, confesses she loves him. His first feeling is unabashed lust. But the next morning, the lady vanishes, and then an overweight, wildly jealous patient appears at Joel’s office to confess she forced Margot’s car off the road. Is it the client’s fantasy … or is Margot dead? A twisted skein of love, murder and compulsion soon leads Joel Abramowitz on a frantic womanhunt through California’s mad, mad world. And he certainly has his hands full, dealing with “issues” and outright lunacy — and fearing what may reside in the shadowlands of his own desperate heart….

Bloomsbury’s Late Rose

A poet in Edwardian London. A woman struggling to let her voice be heard.

In 1894, sisters Charlotte and Anne Mew take a solemn vow never to marry, and never to pass on the family curse: insanity. The spinster Mew sisters descend into genteel poverty, their mother on an invalid’s sofa, Anne, the painter, in a menial job.But Charlotte, the poet, will find immortality, and unexpected love. Her path will require that she keep secrets and make sacrifices that may be too much even for Charlotte’s determined spirit.

In Bloomsbury’s Late Rose, Pen Pearson, herself an accomplished poet, has imagined a vivid and affecting story of a woman’s life in Edwardian London that will engage and move every reader.

We hope that the publication of this groundbreaking novel will bring more attention to Mew, one of the great unrecognized poets of the Edwardian era. Here you can read more poems by Charlotte Mew.

Probability Shadow

A single voice in the darkness stands alone against the fall of civilization, as a great new science fiction saga begins.

Probability Shadow, the first novel in Mark Laporta’s Against the Glare of Darkness trilogy, leads you into a new universe, where a critical mineral shortage pits imperious humans against every major political power. As their battles rage, the Quishiks re-emerge, an ancient evil with unprecedented control over time and space — which foretells the end of all sentient life. To stop this onslaught, Ambassador Ungent Draaf of Grashard must forge an unlikely alliance of misfits from across the galaxy’s entire political spectrum — a force of humans, symbiotes, mutants, androids and the ghostly remnants of a vanished civilization — and unite them in one seemingly impossible goal: to drive the conquering Quishiks back to their multidimensional prison and restore order to the galaxy.

In a universe dominated by great powers on the verge of collapse, and as the mistakes of the past become the legacy of the future, one question remains: will sentient life ever rise above the specter of evil?
